The former French colony, the country was one of the first to abolish slavery and was the second American country to decree its independence.
It‘s one of the most politically unstable countries in the world. During the “Cold War“ the country lived a dictatorship with obvious American support due to its proximity to Cuba.
After several blows, the country entered the XXI century fully lacerated to the point of requesting humanitarian aid to the UN (MINUSTAH). The aid was led by Brazilian troops until recently.
The country is on the hurricane route and also presents a geologically unstable territory. It has one of the lowest IDHS in the world.
